STORIES OF THE BORDERS. |
|
Throughout this site there are many stories relating to Border life, some of which are amusing, some sad, but, we hope, all interesting. Visitors to the site may want to go directly to a story as, we believe, many are worth telling (and reading) again and, possibly, again. They are listed below and also included are other items of particular interest. Please be aware that some of these can be seen elsewhere in the site in context. Stories passed down through the generations are likely to gather inaccuracies and embellishments on the way and so it is unlikely that many of these stories can be regarded as historically accurate. But who knows? It must be conceded that the substance if not the detail of many Border stories is historically true. So many stories were handed down the generations by ballad, changes inevitably being made on the way. Then came the writers such as Sir Walter Scott created his own version of the ballads. It is widely thought that Scott's ballads are historically correct. In fact he often exaggerated the prowess of the Scotts Clan to the detriment of other clans and freely adapted the story line to suit his writings. It has been said that Scott never let a good story get in the way of the truth. But that's another story....... |
