Border Castles and Towers

  Edlingham Castle

Location:

Lies to the north of the wild road from Alnwick to Rothbury the B6341.The castle site is signposted.

The site of the castle does not seem to be strong but it was formerly encircled

by a barmkin which was further strengthened by a ditch of water.

The castle began as a fortified manor house of which the tower is only one part,

The stronghold was later strengthened by a stone curtain wall and gatehouse.

Family association: the Swinburnes.

Open all the year, daily.

There is a small car park.

The nearby church is very interesting.

The impressive railway viaduct to the north east of the castle was built in 1885.
