The castle began as a fortified manor house of which the tower is only one part, The stronghold was later strengthened by a stone curtain wall and gatehouse.

Open all the year, daily. There is a small car park. The nearby church is very interesting. The impressive railway viaduct to the north east of the castle was built in 1885.
