The castle passed to
Henry Percy, the first Earl of Northumberland, in the 14th century when it
was destroyed during the crushing of the rebellion in which Northumberland
was involved.
It remained with the family until it passed to the Crown.
In 1882, it was sold to
the Northumbrian historian, Cadwallader J.Bates , who carefully restored
it.
This took him some twenty years as the building had lain in ruin for
nearly five hundred years.
