Bedrule was the seat of the Turnbull clan. Nearby is the site of their castle, where, in 1494, they were paraded before the king as prisoners with drawn swords in their hands and halters around their necks. A number were promptly executed as an example to the clan and assurances of good behaviour were demanded. Bedrule was, of necessity, well served with strongholds. including Fulton Tower, about a mile away, a strong pele, occupied by a Turnbull who at that time was at deadly feud with the Kers of Ferniehirst. With such feuds being pursued vigorously, the consequences of misdemeanours committed by the Turnbulls and their friends, and the close proximity of the English, all added up to the populous being kept busy preserving their lives and property.
