The Ballantine Clan

also Ballantyne

The Ballantines originally came from Galloway and moved east, settling in Roxburghshire as far back as the 12th century.

James Ballantyne met Sir Walter Scott as classmates under Mr Lancelot Whale, headmaster of Kelso Grammar School. James went into the publishing business in Edinburgh with the help of Sir Walter.

The business published many of Scott's works including the Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border in 1802.

Unfortunately both men ran into financial difficulties and James' business failed.
