The Forster Family

also Foster and Forrester

The Forsters were predominently an English family distributed over much of the Border with Scotland. They indulged in occasional reiving and there are records of a number of Forsters being hanged for being caught.

The most noteable Forster was Sir John who served as Warden of the English Middle March which covered much of Northumberland, a particularly restless region.  He was a successful Warden and held in high esteem by many.  Of course,  took good care to secure his and his family's power and security by acquiring land and wealth, by whatever means.  He was caught up in the Redeswire Incident (see elsewhere on this site) and was involved in helping to subdue a Catholic rebellion for which he was rewarded with gifts of land from a grateful Crown.

The Forsters are still well represented in Northumberland.
