DNA Project update 1 Feb 05
Jim Elliott has forwarded an update regarding the Border Reiver's DNA
Project. I am forwarding it to the A-List, FYI. You can review Jim's webpages,
the "Border Reiver DNA By Surname" page,
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7egallgaedhil/dna_by_surname.htm
and "Border Reiver DNA By Haplogroup" page, respectively.

I have also posted the results in a somewhat different format. See: the
Armstrong
Results spreadsheet at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/armstrong.htm
Jim has also created a discussion webpage at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gallgaedhil/haplo_armstrong.htm
Since our last update, we have new results in for Kit #29084, mentioned in Jim's message below. It will be interesting to see whether the Kit #29084 SNP test results in an I1b finding as hypothesized by Jim, or a J2 finding, as I believe. The "Deep Ancestry" page developed by Jim Elliott is particularly relevant and interesting in relation to this new set of results.
See:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gallgaedhil/border_reiver_deep_ancestry.htm
As well, we have a set of Oxford Ancestor's results contributed by the test
subject. To the extent those results are comparable, you will note that the OA
results fit the general pattern of the R1b Armstrong Haplotype. Regarding the
R1b Armstrongs, we have a bit of a divide at DYS 458 where some =19 and others
=20. The sample is too small as yet to say whether one value or the other is the
predominate Armstrong Haplotype. See also Y-GATA H4, with 11 vs 12; and YCA-IIb,
with 23 vs 19. Hopefully, this will resolve as we gain additional participants,
to the point where we can say one or the other haplotype pattern is the
predominate Armstrong Haplotype. In all cases, we are beginning to have some
typical patterns develop, which may give new participants further research focus
as their results come in and matches develop.
DNA results are being shared between the Armstrong DNA Project and the Border
Reivers DNA Project, as well as other projects. You can participate in the
overall project by joining the Armstrong DNA Project. You can order the DNA test
kit on-line at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=P54686&special=True
and pay via VISA, etc. The kit is very light weight and fits in a mailing
envelope that is quite small.
Be sure to order at least the Y-DNA25 kit. Anything less is inadequate for the
purposes of the study.
If you have any questions, John D. Armstrong, Bob Armstrong, Jim Elliott and I
are available to help.
